ABSTRACT: The disease association studies by Professor Carole Ober from University of Chicago in the Hutterite cohort were widely applauded, especially for the asthma study. In this paper, the asthma study was reviewed to conclude the rules for cohort studies. A cohort with relatively pure background, a proper classification and definitions for the disease, necessary repeats, and the analyses on the joint effects of genes and environmental factors were all pivotal parts of the study.

Key words: Hutterite; Cohort; Asthma; Genetics
